If you were one of the dedicated souls that went to work in Nova Scotia this week, you got to enjoy snow covered roads … did I mention I love my Jeep.
There was also lots of blowing snow & cold wind. I also prefer to be in my Jeep but David Boudreau, our Sales manager, loves his sports car … it took us over 30 minutes to push the car out of the parking lot, in the heart of the storm & cold! Guess who was outside the car pushing!
When you got home at night … 40 centimeters of snow was waiting for you. Unless someone in your home works somewhere that had snow days … Like my kids who received 2 days off school. I would like to thank my son Travis and both daughters Natalie & Victoria for sparing me from a snow covered driveway. None of this would have happened without the leadership of my wife, Dawna.
I don’t want to make light of snow storms. Friends & family of ours experienced lost of power around New Glasgow, N.S … not a great feeling mixed with the cold.
The roof of a warehouse owned by the Scotian Gold apple co-operative, a great partner of ours, partially collapsed in Coldbrook, N.S. when workers were evacuated from the building … I hope no one was hurt.
Scotian Gold is the largest dealer of orchard supplies in Atlantic Canada. They carry a complete range of specialized orchard supplies including Trail Blazer’s pruning equipment, trellis supplies, pressure treated posts, picking baskets, ladders and grafting supplies. They supplying almost anything a grower needs to produce their crops and operate their farms, and will go out of our way to source it if we do not have it.
When heavy snow bend trees out of shape, the snow should be removed immediately and an attempt made to straighten the bent branch or trunk.
If the tree has been squashed to where it extends into traffic areas, it may have to be pruned. May I recommend Trail Blazer’s Jumbo Lopper? Available at Home Hardware, Lee Valley, Sam’s Club, True Value & Garrett Wade.
Broken branches don’t need immediate attention. However, it’s advisable to prune off broken branches as soon as the weather allows. Prune damaged branches back to another branch or the main trunk.
Sometimes bark is torn & should be carefully trimmed with a sharp knife. May I recommend Trail Blazer’s Xtend-A-Blade? This product is equipped with a sharp knife & pruning saw. Very handy to have both. Plus it may be extended to easily handle any out of reach pruning.
Well winter is here!! It is the time for driveway shoveling & trail maintenance. I know it can be tough but don’t forget to take this opportunity to enjoy the beauty it brings to our trails and gardens. Got to go and take, Rollie, my dog for a walk. I Love Winter!!
All the Best, Shawn Levangie
